Lingua Franca @ In The City

Lingua Franca is bringing world music to the In The City music convention for the first time by means of a panel discussion open to convention delegates.

The panel will take place at the Midland Hotel in Manchester at 1.15pm on Tuesday, 7 October and will raise the question: "In an Increasingly Global Society, has the Term "World Music" Now Become Patronising?

Panellists will include the Congolese superstar Kanda Bongo Man, who is signed to the South African record label, Gallo (part of the Warner Group) Steve Chandra Savale (aka Chandrasonic) from British Electronica band, Asian Dub Foundation and Anne Tucker of Manchester International Arts, the organisation behind such high profile North West events as Streets Ahead, Feast and Mintfest. The panel will be chaired by Lingua Franca's Geli Berg.

Geli says, I am delighted that In the City has given support to this initiative. Despite Manchester being a multicultural hub, the world music genre has played a relatively minor role in the local music industry to date. Lingua Franca, along with other music organisations, is committed to working hard to change this."
